Recreational Vehicles 

Recreational vehicles are also subject to flood protection building requirements.  According to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), under Title 44 Code of Federal Regulations Section 59.1, a ‘recreational vehicle’ is defined as a vehicle which is:

  1. Built on a single chassis;
  2. 400 square feet or less when measured at the largest horizontal projection;
  3. Designed to be self-propelled or permanently towable by a light duty truck; and
  4. Designed primarily not for use as a permanent dwelling but as temporary living quarters for recreational, camping, travel, or seasonal use.

A recreational vehicle placed in a 1% annual chance (100-year) floodplain needs to meet the following NFIP requirements:

  • Meet the elevation and anchoring requirements for manufactured homes, OR
  • Be on the site for fewer than 180 consecutive days, OR
  • Be fully licensed and ready for highway use. ‘Ready for highway use’ means that it is on its wheels, or its jacking system is attached to the site only by quick disconnect type utilities, and has no permanently attached additions.

The purpose of these requirements is to prevent recreational vehicles from being permanently placed in the floodplain unless they are well protected from flooding similar to that of a manufactured home.
